With operations in over 200 countries and territories, Alibaba is the world's largest Retailer and E-Commerce company, one of the largest Internet and AI companies, one of the biggest venture capital firms, and one of the biggest investment corporations in the world. The company hosts the largest B2B (Alibaba.com), C2C (Taobao), and B2C (Tmall) marketplaces in the world. Its online sales and profits surpassed all US retailers (including Walmart, Amazon and eBay) combined since 2015.
It has been expanding into the media industry, with revenues rising by triple percentage points year on year. It also sets the record on the 2018 edition of China's Singles' Day, the world's biggest online and offline shopping day.

Naming of Alibaba Group

The company's name came from the character Ali Baba from the Middle Eastern folk tale collection "One Thousand and One Nights" because of its universal appeal. As Jack Ma, one of the founders explained,
"One day I was in San Francisco in a coffee shop, and I was thinking Alibaba is a good name and then a waitress came, and I said, "Do you know about Alibaba?" And she said yes. I said, "What do you know about?", and she said, "Open Sesame". And I said, "Yes, this is the name!" Then I went on to the street and found 30 people and asked them, "Do you know Alibaba?" People from India, people from Germany, people from Tokyo and China ... they all knew about Alibaba. Alibaba – open sesame. Alibaba is a kind, smart business person, and he helped the village. So ... easy to spell, and globally known. Alibaba opens sesame for small- to medium-sized companies. We also registered the name "Alimama", in case someone wants to marry us!"

Jack Ma

"Jack Ma" is the president of the popular trading site Alibaba Group and the richest person in China. Currently, Jack Ma's assets amount to $ 25 billion he has a 7.8% stake in Alibaba, and his steak is almost 50% in the payment processing firm Ali Pay.
Jack Ma was born on 10 September 1964 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. He was the second of three children of his parents. He had one elder brother and younger sister. He began studying English at a young age by conversing with English-speakers at Hangzhou international hotel. The financial condition of his family was not very good. He would ride 70 miles on his bicycle to give tourists tours of the area to practice his English for nine years. He became pen pals with one of those foreigners, who nicknamed him "Jack" because he found it hard to pronounce his Chinese name. Jack's parents used to sing songs. Jack's grandfather was a local official of the nationalist party of China.
Later in his youth, Jack Ma struggled attending college. The Chinese entrance exams are held only once a year and Ma took four years to pass. After that, he got the chance to be admitted to the Huangzhou Teachers Institute. In 1988 he graduated. While at school, Jack Ma was head of the student council. After graduation, he became a lecturer in English and International Trade at Hangzhou Dianzi University.


Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT)

Harbin Institute of Technology was established in 1920. It is a research university and member of China's Elite C9 league. Currently, it has been upgraded to a university, which focuses on Science, Management, Humanity and Engineering of social science-supported faculty. The Harbin Institute of Technology, Double-First Class University in a class under the Chinese Ministry of Education.
